SYMPAAN

The second edition of the Algant Alumni Network Symposium (SYMPAAN) will take place from the 3rd to the 7th of October 2023, at St Jacut de La Mer, in Bretagne, France – the talks, the meals and the overnight stay.

About the Event

The primary objective of SYMPAAN is to bring together all Algant Alumni, regardless of the path they have taken after Algant, and to provide an event that appeals to everyone, from those still in academia, to those employed in the private sector, and those working in maths education and/or popularisation. The symposium has been carefully planned to offer a platform for all attendees to engage with their peers, share knowledge, and collaborate on emerging research in mathematics.

The event will be structured as follows:

The first two and a half days, from Tuesday the 3rd afternoon until Thursday the 5th, will focus on mathematics research in academia. Attendees will have the opportunity to share and discuss their research findings with fellow researchers.

The last two days will be dedicated to Algant Alumni working outside academia. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with industry experts, share experiences and insights, and participate in workshops and roundtables on various related topics.

We recognize that attending the full symposium may be challenging, especially for those employed outside academia. Therefore, we offer the possibility of arriving on Thursday the 5th to attend the remaining two days of the symposium.

Funding

Some funding is available. We will most likely be able to cover lodging expenses for all the participants.

How to Get There

From Rennes Train Station

There is a direct train from Paris Montparnasse to Rennes. We will organize a shuttle from Rennes train station to the Abbaye of St. Jacut.

From Rennes Airport

The closest airport is Rennes Airport. There is a TER (a train) that takes you from the airport to the Rennes train station. The problem is then reduced to the From Rennes Train Station case.

We look forward to welcoming you to St Jacut de La Mer, Bretagne, France, for an engaging and informative week of mathematics research and collaboration.

The ALGANT Alumni Network has finally a head office!
It is virtual, but it is no less comfortable or cozy than a welcoming home!

There you will find whiteboards to discuss maths, sofas to relax, games to play and even a kitchen if you feel hungry. Do not hesitate to come and visit, take a coffee or see if anybody is around.

You are also encouraged to use it to organize a virtual meeting or game night with your ALGANT friends!
(caution: upper bound of 25 contemporary users)

The address you might wonder… It is in Gathertown, just ask on slack for more precise directions!

The success of the first AAN Welcoming held in 2020 could not be left without a heir. Aware of some improvements that might have been introduced from the previous year, and with some more experience in our backpacks, we were joyful to organise the Second AAN Welcoming for Master students, which is now established as a tradition of the association.

On the 27th August 2021, a dozen of alumni and more than 30 (!) currents master students gathered online to enjoy a friendly afternoon on Zoom.
The students had the possibility to to get to know each other, discuss with more experienced colleagues, enter breakout sessions specific for their next destination, chat, had many of their doubts solved and even compete in a thrilling pub quiz!
But no way, this time a team from the Alumni could get the best score from it. Will this victory be revenged next year?

We are planning to hold the very much awaited 2AAANWftAMS on the 27th of August 2021 starting at 14h00 in CEST-time!

What? You do not know what it is? We were hoping the acronym was giving some hints, but hey, maybe you just need us to spell it out. Of course it is the 2nd Annual AAN Welcoming for the ALGANT Master Students. And of course it will be held online, as its long-lasting tradition demand.

This relaxed afternoon is bringing together alumni and current master students: it will be an occasion to get in touch, make new acquaintances, find old friends, ask and answer questions about the organisation of the master and about everyday-life tips.

If you are willing to come, just drop an email to roberto [dot] gualdi [at] mathematik [point] uni [dash] regensburg [dot] de.

We hope to see you there!

One of the main concerns of the AAN is to create bridges between Alumni and current master students and to make available to the latter the experience of the former.

On the 7th August 2020, this guiding idea of the organisation was put into practise through the First AAN Welcoming for Master students, which gathered several ALGANT students and some Alumni.

The students could enjoy a friendly afternoon on Zoom to get to know each other, discuss with the Alumni and prepare at best their arrival in the ALGANT community or their transition from the first to the second year. They could find answers both to general questions like “How does the visa system work?” or “When should I find a thesis advisor?”, and to location-specific ones such as “How are the courses organised in my new ALGANT University?” or “How much of the local language should I know?”, which were addressed to expert Alumni in separate breakout sessions.

The excitement and curiosity of the attendance was so high that the two hours originally scheduled for the meeting proved not to be enough to answer everything!

On 7 Aug 2020, we will hold our 1st Annual AAN Welcoming for the ALGANT Master Students (1AAANWftAMS for short… until we figure out a cooler acronym). It will be online since Zoom sessions are trendy these days. And they’re free.

You are very much welcome to join as a participant, but what we need is help from you in the form of tips and stories for the incoming Master students.

We are collecting experiences and tips to share from the alumni when they were once in the ALGANT Masters program. The organizers have their tips to share, but of course everyone had a different experience during their ALGANT Masters. And so we want your tips and experiences! Names optional. More information on the description of this form: https://forms.gle/EorQzeDEvzHHfbp76.

You can answer as many questions as you like, and submit as many times as you like. We’re not even asking for your email so we cannot spam you afterwards (we have no intention to in any case).

However, if you are the type of person who wants to be updated with the news about upcoming events, or even help out (every little bit helps) leave us your email here: https://forms.gle/5fvBbDBxXQCe4Nt27. Recent ALGANT graduates are strongly encouraged to sign up here. Not-so-recent graduates, feel free to do the same.

Thanks for reading. Have a good summer. Or winter. Or wet/dry season if you are from the tropics.

The three days long event was attended by more than 40 participants. The scientific program included two lectures given by Pilar Bayer and Bas Edixhoven, plenary talks given by Menny Akka, Ziyang Gao, Sourav Ghosh, Ariyan Javanpeykar and Daniele Turchettiseveral expositions given by the ALGANT alumni, an outreach moment and a very enjoyable session of speed talks.

The conference ended with an excursion in the beautiful natural surroundings of Benasque and a delicious social dinner.
